Poster Analysis

The dominant reading is that the image is having to get across that there's a strong presence when wearing this brand which 50 Cent has and younger members of the audience look up to him as their role model. As a result of purchasing this brands products you will instantly become like 50 Cent in some ways. The image of his finger prints is to show is identity which makes him who he is. On the other hand the oppositional reading contrasts with this thought as the finger prints are there to tell us about his criminal record. This could then have a negative effect on the younger members of the audience as they may perceive  the situation as being a criminal makes you famous as they're more impressionable.

The dominant reading of this poster is that buying these shoes will help you to perform better as a basketballer as the slogan says 'Rise Above'. I can connote that this is to get the audience to be more inclined to purchasing this product as Derrick Rose is one of the most recognisable athletes around the world. As a result of this people will recognise his accomplishments as an athlete and would want to buy products he's promoting. The image shows to have skill and dominance which people will want to adopt as result of purchasing the shoes to duplicate Derrick Roses performance as an athlete. However, the oppositional reading could be that when purchasing this product it will instantly make the individual better which could be disappointing for them as they may not improve.

MIGRAIN introduction to Media: Reading an image

Denotation - The poster is of the rapper 50 Cent, on the right of the poster is his finger prints and a quote from him. He is promoting the brand RBK.

Connotation - From this poster I can connote that the finger prints are to indicate 50cents criminal persona which he is known for being as an individual or when he's rapping. This will attract the audience as they'd think if they buy RBK they will adopt his personality and become more like 50Cent. The image of 50Cent himself is as if he's dressed for war as he is wearing a camouflaged hat which is usually used in the army. This is another indication of his bad boy appearance that all his fans admire about him.

Colour - The poster is  monochrome which gives the impression that he's done something that's not legal. It also shows the presence and the dominance 50cent has and if the audience were to buy RBK products they'd also have this effect on people.

Pose - The posture of 50Cent is intimidating to the audience, he is presented to have a firm posture to show the authority he has which illustrates to the audience the power which he posses.

Framing - The poster is framed like this so we can see 50Cent and also to see his identity. I can connote that it is framed like this so we can see both sides of 50Cent, the criminal side to him and the rapper to him. It is done so we can see his past and his present so the audience can identify what he has done to become the way he is which he isn't ashamed to tell anyone but embraces his past.

Composition - The image of 50Cent is placed on the left of the poster with his finger prints on the right. I can connote that this is done to show both 50Cent as a person and his DNA or to show his criminal identity which attracts the audience as 50Cent is known for his criminal persona. The text of is placed on the top right and in the center of the poster with the logo at the bottom right.

Size - Each image on the poster takes up half the page, the slogan 'i am what i am' is the largest text on the poster and the RBK logo is the smallest. The quote by 50cent is larger than the RBK logo so the audience can identify that it's 50Cent saying it.

Type of shot - The shot used is a medium close up, this is to give a clear image of the facial expression of 50Cent. This is important as his facial expression synergies with his criminal side because it shows his power which is intimidating.

Subject matter - The subject of the photograph is the product RBK which is being advertised.

Setting - The photograph was taken inside in a isolated room with no light.

Lighting - The lighting is used to make a dark atmosphere to show the presence of 50Cent. The light is placed on his face and his arms to show his facial expression and muscles for the audience to see the power he possesses. The lighting makes the audience feel more intimidated by the authority that 50Cent has which makes them more inclined to buy the product as they want to adopt his personality.

Denotation - The poster is of basketballer Derick Rose jumping in the air with a basketball. There's another image in the background of the athlete, the logo of the product is at the bottom left with the slogan and the top right.

Connotation - I can connote that the image is of Derick Rose dunking the ball. This will attract the audience to the buy the product so they'd be able to duplicate similar moves to Derick Rose.

Colour - The background of the image is in black and white where as the foreground is in colour to highlight the athlete. This is done to highlight the product being sold to the audience as they're brighter than the rest of the image.

Pose - In the foreground of the poster there is Derick Rose jumping in the air, in the background there is another image of him standing. The facial expression of him in the foreground is showing concentration as he's looking directly at the ball.

Framing - The foreground displays the image of a basketballer jumping in the air in colour, the background is another image of the basketballer but in black and white with the image also blurred out.

Size - The text of the product and the name of the product are smaller than the other images on the poster. The logo placed at the bottom left visible enough for the audience to see. The slogan is the largest text on the poster which says 'Rise Above' which will attract the audience as they'd want to stand out from the crowd which this product promises to do by rising above everyone else. The image of Derick Rose is the largest image on the poster to highlight the product being sold.

Type of shot - The shot is a long shot from a low angle shot. This is to make Derick Rose to see more superior to other athletes that don't wear the same product he does. This makes the audience more inclined to buy the shoes.

Subject matter - The subject of the product is the shoes that are worn by basketballer Derick Rose.

Setting - The background is taken inside a basketball arena and the foreground is a photo of a basketballer with the background being cropped.

Lighting - The background is in black and white which gives the effect that this is something to do with his future and the foreground is in colour with the lighting bright indicating that this is how he is now. I can connote that this is trying to indicate that the shoes he's wearing have made him develop as a player making him better.
